Visiting Temples

Religion is deeply ingrained in Bali, with an emphasis on Hinduism. Ceremonies take place on a daily basis in the numerous temples complexes dotting the island. Each one features its own specificities and atmosphere so that you will never grow tired of visiting them. Among the most famous you might wish to visit :

  • Pura Luhur Ulawatu, clinging to a cliff with its sunset Kecak shows
  • Pura Tanah Lot, one of Bali's major temples, built on a black rock outcropping in the 16th century.
  • Taman Ayun Temple, located in Mengwi (The capital of the kingdom until the 19th century)
  • Pura Ulun Danu Batran, on the shores of lake Batran
  • Pura Besakih built on the slope of Mount Agung, it is the island's largest ( 3 sq. km) and holiest temple.
  • Gunung Kawi is built in a steep-sided valley landscaped with rice terraces.
  • Pura Tirta Empul is the temple of the island's most sacred spring.
  • Goa Gadja, otherwise known as « The Elephant Cave», dating back to the 11th century.
  • Puri Agung Karangasem and Ujung Water Palace which used to be a summer palace with its architecture revolving around water.

Markets and street atmosphere

You will undoubtedly enjoy strolling along the streets of Ubud with a range of delightful shops, bars, restaurants and its bustling market.

You may also have the opportunity to discover local markets such as the fish market in Jimbaran, Bedugul's fruit and vegetable market or Sukawati's market.

You will have the opportunity to attend shows featuring traditional dances such as Kecak or Legong.

Sporting activities and attractions

  • Scuba diving and snorkelling :. Bali is renowned worlwide for its diving spots. Bali offers an impressive range of diving sites that will satisfy the wishes of fans of macrophotography and divers hoping to watch large sea animals alike. Nudibranches, manta rays, sunfish, sea turtles and a lot of other species will escort you during your dives.
  • Kite surfing : The beach in Sanur is a well-known kite-surfing spot.
  • Surfing : the island offers ideal surfing conditions for beginners as well as veteran surfers.

Trekking and hiking

A lot of people take great pleasure in walking in the rice fields to discover the island's breathtaking landscapes.
Bicycle fans will find itineraries adapted to all levels while visitors prefering motorbikes or scooters may visit the whole island through one-day itineraries.

Bali is also famous for its treks among which the climb of Mount Agung, Abang and Mount Batur's caldeira while rafting and canyoning on the Ayung or Telaga Waja rivers will meet the needs of thrill-seekers.

Golfing : Bali has four golf courses ranging from 9 to 18 holes, with Sanur's sporting 9 holes.


  • Only a 30-mn drive from Sanur, The Bali Bird and Reptile Park will easily fill a half-day walking in this lovely park filled with more than 250 species of exotic birds.
  • The Bali Safari and Marine Park organizes one-day safari tours and elephant rides but it also an amusement park offering a variety of rides and water-based attractions. (30mn drive from Sanur)
  • Acrobranche (tree climbing) : This park is composed of seven itineraries and 72 obstacles of different levels designed for all ages from 4 to adults. (2-hour drive from Sanur)

The beaches

In short, Bali is a fabulous island offering a diversity of beaches for everyone's taste :

  • You may appreciate Sanur for the safety of its gentle beaches where a lot of ceremonies are regularly held.
  • Seminyak will welcome you with its long black sand beach where you might come to enjoy a drink at sunset.
  • The Bukit Peninsula's coves are particularly appreciated by veteran surfers.
  • The east coast of the island with its wild beaches of glittering black sand offers a stark contrast from the white sand beach at Pantai Pandawa.
